Auchgoyle Farm, Millhouse, Tighnabruaich, Argyll

Katharine and David Lowrie own and manage this 80 acre farm in the temperate rainforest zone on the West Coast of Scotland, Argyll.

Topic: Planting trees

Their vision is to return the land to a diverse, thriving, resilient landscape - rich in wildlife - and fully connected and adapted to climate change.

About the farm

The couple are creating a mosaic of woodland, scrub, hedgerows, species-rich grassland, and wetland habitats to create:

  • an opportunity to encourage abundant wildlife
  • a landscape resilient to climate change, allowing animals and plants to move through the farm and wider landscape

A small herd of rare breed Shetland cattle, a few hardy ponies and occasional pigs are helping with the restoration of the land.

Why Trees?

Our Woodland Creation scheme has helped fund:

  • the planting of over 20,000 trees on 1/3 of the farm
  • the erection of a 3km deer fence
  • a 1 hectare agroforestry plot

David and Katharine are also witnessing the natural regeneration of the remnant ancient and semi-natural farm woodlands in the absence of grazing and browsing.

Woodland Trust have also been hugely helpful through their MoreHedges and MoreTrees schemes.

Their MOREhedges scheme includes saplings, advice and funding for new hedging projects of 100 metres or more.

MOREHedges

If you are looking to plant 500+ trees on at least half a hectare, you can apply for saplings, advice and funding through MOREWoods scheme.
