Scotland’s woods and forests deliver multiple benefits, including through timber production, as well as recreation and tourism.
To fully realise the benefits that forests have to offer, they need to be sustainably managed.
What goes in to managing a woodland?
The benefits they can deliver include economic benefits, as well as environmental benefits, such as:
- supporting the employment of over 34,000 people and contributing over £1 billion to Scotland's GVA
Economic contribution of forestry
- helping us adapt to climate change and mitigate its impacts by absorbing millions of tonnes of carbon
Managing woodlands to combat climate change
- providing a home to over 1,000 species, including 172 priority species and supporting efforts to tackle the biodiversity crisis

They also deliver a range of other benefits to the people and communities of Scotland.
