Woods for All

Woods for All is increasing the opportunities for under-represented groups to access and enjoy the benefits of our woodlands and forests.

Topic: Using woodlands

Under-represented groups

We know that diverse groups and people are not accessing woodlands on a regular basis.

Studies have demonstrated multiple barriers that limit access for diverse groups.

These barriers include:

  • distance to woodland
  • being under-represented in woodland environments
  • feeling unwelcome and/or excluded
  • fearing discrimination

Woods for All is supporting activity to challenge these barriers with a focus on the following priority groups:

  • ethnic minorities
  • youth
  • disabilities
  • faith
  • older adults
  • sexual orientation
  • socially deprived communities

Did you know?

We run a community Facebook page.

What kind of forest activities do you get involved with? What would you like to see?

Let us know, and keep up to date with future events by joining our group.

Examples of projects we have supported

Wondering where your local woodland is?

Not knowing where your local woods are presents an immediate barrier. Where to start?

Where can I visit?

If you are looking for ideas of woodlands to visit and inspiration for activities to do, then visit our sister agency, Forestry and Land Scotland. They look after Scotland’s national forests.

Search for woods (Forestry and Land Scotland website)

You can also locate woods near you with the Woodland Trust's 'Find a wood' service.

  • developing materials (in appropriate languages e.g. English, Scots, Gaelic, Polish, Urdu etc.) that promote the health and wellbeing benefits of using woodlands

Download our Woodlands for All plants and trees booklet

Discover a whole world of plants and trees in the woods and forests on your doorstep.

This little booklet came about due to the realisation that many of Scotland’s woodland trees, shrubs and flowers have connections with other peoples and cultures around the world.

Through stories and folklore, or through the foods, remedies and other useful materials they provide - it paints a fascinating picture.
