Topic: Using woodlands

Outdoor Learning is embedded in our curriculum in Scotland. It offers exciting and challenging opportunities for learning.

A vital part of education, it benefits everyone and supports:

  • good health and wellbeing - both physical and mental
  • awareness of issues like climate change and sustainable development (learning for sustainability)
  • knowledge and understanding of outdoor environments

Outdoor Woodland Learning (OWL) Scotland

OWL Scotland is dedicated to increasing the use of Scotland's outdoor environments for learning, be this in:

  • playgrounds
  • towns
  • cities
  • parks
  • our stunning natural environments

Outdoor learning actively engages young people, connecting their learning to the world around them.

OWL Scotland is supported by Scottish Forestry and evolved out of the Forest Education Initiative which ran for over 20 years.

The OWL Scotland website provides free downloadable learning resources and information on:

  • local OWL groups
  • training
  • events
  • networking opportunities
  • careers in Forestry
