Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Depending on the size, sensitivities or location of your project, you might need an EIA. This assesses the potential environmental effects of your proposed woodland creation.

A screening opinion is required if the application area exceeds:

  • 20 hectares
  • 2 hectares within a National Scenic Area (NSA)

You'll also need a screening option for any afforestation in a sensitive area.

You can read more about Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and sensitive areas are on our EIA page.

Forestry Environmental Impact Assessments

If a project is considered likely to have a significant impact on the environment you will be required to submit an environmental statement.

Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA)

Under the Habitats Regulations, we must consider whether any proposed forestry plan or project will have a significant effect on a European site before we give authorisation. This process is known as a Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA).

Habitats Regulations Appraisal (HRA)

Forestry Grant Scheme (FGS)

If you are applying for a grant you most receive an approved grant before starting any work.
