Topic: Planting trees

About the farm

Much of this broadleaved woodland was planted under Rural Priorities funding in 2009 with pockets of mature woodland, including conifer shelterbelts.

The woodland is home to around 160 Mangalitsa pigs managed in a rotational mob grazing system, with the woodland supporting the pigs to be reared outside year-round.

About 60 pigs a year go to slaughter, with meat mostly marketed direct to consumer. A further 40 weaners a year are sold.

Why trees?

The woodland farm is an innovative example of bringing farming to woodlands, creating multi-purpose woodlands that:

  • support livestock
  • produce timber
  • tackle climate change
  • improve biodiversity

The Woolly Pig Company won Best Agroforestry Award at the 2024 Scottish Agricultural Awards. David has also won the Farm Woodland Young People’s Award at the 2023 Scotland’s Finest Woods Awards.
