Preparing a Woodland Management Plan

Last updated :17 Apr 2025

Topic: Manage forests

This guide will help you prepare a management plan for your woodland. It's aimed at managers and landowners of woodland under 100 hectares.

Summary

A management plan for woodlands under 100 hectares must be completed before you apply for a grant.

We recommend that you:

•    read this guide before preparing a plan
•    keep a checklist of what you need to do

You can contact one of our local offices (also known as a Conservancy) with any questions.

Who is the guide for?

It’s useful for anyone managing a woodland and considering a Forestry Grant Scheme application.

How will my plan be assessed?

We will assess your management plan against the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) criteria.

Consider Appendix 1 carefully as it sets out the UKFS requirements for forest planning.
